Classical Music in India
Carnatic music has been one of two main forms of classical music in India. India used to have
one common music system till the 13th century. It was after the invasions in the North
brought in Arab and Persian influences that Hindustani music developed from the common
system of music. In the meanwhile, the music that developed in the South of India along the
original lines of the old Indian classical system was called Carnatic music.
Both these classical forms boast of rich histories, intriguing technical aspects, and
accomplished singers and musicians who have made Indian music famous within and outside the
country.
Interesting facts about the flute
- A flute player is also called a flautist or flutist.
- There are two types of flutes in India - the bansuri with six holes that is played in
Hindustani music and the venu with eight holes that is played in Carnatic music.
- The Western flute is different from the Carnatic flute. It is made of metal. Different
types of Western flutes include piccolo, C flute, Eb Soprano flute, Alto flute, and Bass
flute.
- The flute has one of the highest pitches among wind instruments.
- The Carnatic flute is held horizontally but some flutes like the Japanese bamboo flute
are held vertically.

About Vilmax
Vilmax, the Subramaniam Academy of Performing Arts, started in 2007 is the home for great
music and musicians. Guided by the vision of our founders, legendary musicians Dr. L.
Subramaniam and Kavita Krishnamurti Subramaniam, and ably led by singer-songwriter Bindu
Subramaniam and violinist Ambi Subramaniam, Vilmax has a strong legacy of excellence in
Carnatic and global music.
Here at Vilmax, we believe in ‘learning through fun’. We have exciting, interactive elements
in all our lessons, and ensure that students bring their musical vision to life while also
having a great time.

When we say flute, we refer to the 8-hole Carnatic flute made of bamboo. This
is the ideal instrument for Carnatic flute beginners.
Vilmax flute classes have been designed to teach this wind instrument to
students of all ages and musical backgrounds in a systematic way that will
perfect the basics. Our syllabus has been developed in-house and includes
both theoretical and practical components of Indian classical music.
You will get a solid foundation in Carnatic music and also learn to read
notations and symbols. You will learn the correct way to breathe, blow,
phrase, and finger from the methodical approach to learning. Our textbooks
also have audio material to help you perfect your practice outside class
hours.
It is always good to listen to performances, try out different songs on your
own, talk to other students learning the Carnatic flute, and, of course,
there is no substitute to continuous and regular practice.
As we have a good idea of both our educators and your requirements based on
our conversation with you, we will be able to match your requirements and
assign you a suitable teacher for your flute live classes. You can rest
assured that all our educators are skilled and passionate teachers!
We conduct our one-on-one classes online while our group classes (with small
batch sizes of maximum five) are held at our centres at Sanjaynagar and
Rajajinagar. Do get in touch with our expert to learn which option is
available for Carnatic flute live classes.
We would like to add here that our students have enjoyed online flute classes
immensely, thanks to Vilmax's friendly and passionate educators. They ensured
that students had fun while learning in keeping with Vilmax's motto of
'enjoying while learning'.
Once you sign up for the Carnatic flute classes, we will connect you with the
educator. Classes will then be scheduled at the time you selected on an
online platform such as Zoom.
Vilmax educators do make allowances for emergencies and reschedule the odd
class. We would like to request that when possible, you reschedule the class
24 hours in advance. We would also recommend that you do your utmost to
attend classes as scheduled to ensure continuity and discipline which will
promote systematic learning.
Fortunately, no! You are never too young or too old to learn music. We
currently have learners from older age groups as well.
While it does help to have learnt vocals before you learn an instrument, it
is not a prerequisite. Vilmax educators will give you a solid foundation
that will enable you to learn the Carnatic flute systematically and
thoroughly. You can also learn all about Carnatic flute and get properly
introduced to it to give you a headstart before the class. :)
It really depends on what your goals are and also on the hours and quality of
your practice. You can learn the beginner notes and some basic songs within
a few months. However, It would require a few years to be stage-ready. And
of course, a lifetime to be a great musician!
